Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd.
Mitsubishi Rayon to Supply Advanced Composite
Materials for Airbus A380 Super Jumbo Program
The European aircraft manufacturing consortium Airbus has announced that Mitsubishi Rayon has been selected as a supplier of advanced composite materials for use in the A380 program for the development and production of the next-generation super jumbo passenger aircraft.
Mitsubishi Rayon will supply various Airbus factories with UD pre-preg, woven pre-preg, and specialty resin for composite materials. These products will incorporate two types of carbon fiber of medium elasticity and high tensile strength, which will be produced at our equity-method affiliate Structil S.A. in France as well as at our Toyohashi Plant in Japan.
The Company’s products are currently under testing by Airbus with a view to receiving certification for the relevant quality standards by the end of calendar 2004. The full-scale supply of the materials is thus scheduled to begin in early 2005.
A major factor that is believed to have influenced Airbus in its decision to award the contract to Mitsubishi Rayon is our possession of a production and supply system of sufficient scale and reliability to meet the aircraft maker’s growing demand for carbon fibers and composite materials incorporating such fibers. Airbus’s demand for such materials is expected to rise steeply with the start of production of the A380 next-generation airliner as well as other aircraft. In particular, it is thought that the Company was selected because of its fully integrated system of production from the basic raw material of acrylonitrile (AN) through precursor, carbon fiber, and pre-preg. Also believed to have been influential in the choice is the Company’s renowned speed of response in the development of specialty resins for composite materials, its excellent technical support system, and its rigorous product quality control system.
The move by Airbus is expected to significantly accelerate Mitsubishi Rayon’s progress in expanding the field of industrial applications for its carbon fiber products. Moreover, the resulting expanded supply of pre-preg and related composite materials will further strengthen the AN Business Complex, which is one of our core business units.
