Start on mass production of DIAART(TM) Y-Type
prism sheets
for high luminance LCD displays |

Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. has begun full-scale
mass production of DIAART Y-Type prism sheets, which have a
30% higher luminance that conventional sheets used for high
luminance LCD displays. Within three years, the Company expects
to see annual sales of  5
billion from this new product. |

1. Product background
LCD displays
are used in the manufacture of a variety of data devices,
including notebook and desktop computer monitors, mobile
phones, car navigation systems, TVs, and game consoles. According
to a report put together by Japan Electronics and Information
Technology Industries Association (JEITA), the number of
LCD display devices shipped worldwide in 2002 – to be
used in notebook computers, PC monitors, and mobile data
terminals, for example – increased to 7,240 million,
up 40% year-on-year. JEITA also expects this number to roughly
double to 15,500 million by the end of 2005. Most LCDs, with
the exception of some reflection type LCDs, are lit uniformly
by the use of a separate light source, or backlight, built
into the unit behind the panel.
There are two types of backlights – a direct backlight
type where the light source is located behind the diffusion sheet, and an edge-lit
type where the light source is located along the edge of the light guide panel.
Small-scale LCD displays, such as those used in mobile data devices and notebook
computers with monitors under 18 inches, are usually of the more compact edge-lit
type. Edge-lit type LCD displays use prism sheets to attain uniform brightness,
and until this time, manufacturers had to use two prism sheets that faced in
different directions.
Now, with the DIAART Y-Type prism sheet developed by Mitsubishi
Rayon, manufacturers need only one prism sheet to both achieve uniform display
brightness and enhance display brightness by 30 percent. Mitsubishi Rayon has
begun full-scale mass production of the new prism sheet, which has been hailed
by LCD makers everywhere. The current annual production capacity stands at 12
million sheets.
2. DIAART Y-Type specs
Mitsubishi
Rayon has optimized the prism sheet for high luminance LCD
displays on a nanoscale through the use of technology involving
the precise molding of acrylic resins, to produce the DIAART
Y-Type prism sheet, which enhances the light-concentrating
efficiency of the sheet. Since this new product necessitates
the use of only one prism sheet, it has also served to enhance
the luminance of LCDs and make them both thinner and lighter.
